Quality Mulch Matters

The number one reason homeowners do their own mulching is to save money. Why pay for something that you can do yourself? There are quite a few reasons why it may be worth the minimal investment to have a lawn care professional do the job.

  1. Weeds. The free mulch you can pick up from big piles at the local transfer station is not quality mulch. It is likely filled with weed seeds that you'll be introducing into your plant beds - completely defeating the purpose of mulching in the first place.

  2. Diseases. That free mulch may also have diseases that could spread to your plants or attract pests.

  3. Debris. We often see junk mulch that has debris like glass or old nails in it. This happens when the mulch is created from old 2x4’s or old pallets that were shredded up, instead of starting with high-quality hardwood. This is typically the bagged mulch you can buy from Lowes, Home Depot, or other Big Box stores.

  4. Decay. Other mulches will not decay as easily as our quality mulch and you'll have to remove it to keep it from piling up. Years of mulch build-up can create drainage, termite, and pest problems.

  5. Fly Away. Many mulches are made from very dry wood and will blow out of your plat beds during windy storms or when your landscaper comes to do your spring/fall clean-up.

  6. Color. Good quality mulches don't lose their color in the sun, unlike others that turn gray or lose their color entirely.

The mulch JP's Cutting Edge uses is double-shredded hardwood in a dark brown or black that holds its color throughout the season. We often have homeowners tell us in awe that they can’t believe that their mulch still looks great six months after we installed it. Our mulch is heavy and wet, and absorbs water from your sprinkler system or rain, therefore holding it in place for the whole season.
